Although living in East Sooke, Nick stepped up as the BC Green Party MLA Candidate for Delta North on the lower mainland for the 2024 Provincial Election. I would have much preferred a local candidate over myself but unfortunately no one local stepped forward. So, to ensure that residents have the democratic option — in mind vital option — to vote with conscience, whether for party or policy, rather than being limited and having to choose a second choice or skipping voting as a protest, I said I would run.
Regardless of chance of winning, having a quality and complete slate of candidates is important so with absolutely no qualms I can say I was proud to be representing the BC Greens in Delta.
Final results were well within historical ranges - not as good as last election, but also spent much less money, and was a non-local candidate. So I'm not ecstatic about the result but nor am I seriously dismayed. Not being elected did mean I didn't have to do figure out how to ethically represent from a distance or move to the mainland for the first time in my life. Only real regrets is not making it to the two all candidates meetings - first one I had a work conflict I couldn't avoid at the late date I stepped up to run, second I unfortunately suffered what most islanders are used to... the challenges of BC Ferries.
Although in the party eyes all I had to do was get on the ballot, I am pleased to say I managed to respond to many emails and had productive discussions with quite a few people and organizations in person and online.
